About Ipé

IPÉ (aka. Ironwood or Brazilian Hardwood - pronounced "ee-pay") is one of many names used for the group of trees from the various species of Tabebuia. The trees generally grow from 140 to 150 feet, but some can reach heights of 200 feet. The trees are mostly found in Brazil as well as throughout Central and South America.

Ipé's strong, tough resilient properties make it an excellent material and increasingly popular choice for commercial/residential decking and outdoor furniture. It is prized for its stability, durability, strength and natural resistance to decay, wet conditions, and infestation by termites. Ipé wood decking is hard, strong and so dense that slivers are not a problem. Ipé lumber is almost twice as dense as most woods and up to 5 times harder. It is available in long lengths and relatively easy to season. Ipé has a Class-A Fire Rating, the same rating given to concrete and steel.

Ipé wood is a beautiful exotic wood with rich dark brown colors, like a mahogany, so not only lasts a long time but Ipé decking has the beauty of a piece of fine interior furniture. If left untreated, sunlight turns it to a natural silver gray color that can be restored to its original color with limited work.
