Sunroom Glass
The function of sunroom glass is to collect sunlight while
preventing harmful rays from coming through. For an all-season
sunroom, the purpose of glass in the winter is to keep warm air in the
sunroom while keeping cold air out.
Types of Glass
One layer of glass is referred to as single
glazing. Single-glazed glass does not have sufficient insulating
properties and therefore is not often recommended for four-season
sunrooms.
Double-glazed (double layers) glass comprises
two layers of glass that has either air or gas between the two
panes. This prevents air from moving between the layers and better
insulates the room in winter and reduces condensation.
Triple-glazed (triple layers) glass insulates
better than double glazed because it has three layers of glass with
two spaces where air or gas are filled.
Argon-filled windows involve a glazed window
with the space between the glass filled with argon. Argon provides
lots of insulation because it is a dense gas that prevents a air
from passing through.
Low-E (low emission) glass is a chemically
coated glass that a llows light in but blocks radiant heat and
energy. Low E is great in that it obstructs harmful UV rays. Low E
can be clear or found in a variety of tinted tones, which can
further minimize the sun's glare.
Tempered glass is a type of safety glass that
can be standard in some sunrooms. When tempered glass shatters, it
will break into very tiny pieces, reducing the possibility of
injury.
Glass technology has lead to products that are more affordable,
durable, energy efficient and safe. Glass is not only architecturally
stunning, but it is practical in that it is naturally cleaned by rain.
Consumers can purchase glass that better reduces glare and heat,
insulates and meets modern safety requirements.
